På filmverkstedet «VOICE» i Groruddalen i Oslo lærer ungdom å lage filmer med mobiltelefon, om ting som opptar dem. Med veiledning fra de voksne aktivistene Dawit, Sara og Juan diskuterer de hverandres filmer og publiserer dem på nettet – også når innholdet er kontroversielt. Når «VOICE» blir oppsøkt av filmskaperen Rhea, som vil lage en dokumentar om dem for NRK, oppstår en konflikt: Hvilken rett har hun som utenforstående til å fortelle deres historie? Aktivistene krever mer og mer innflytelse, og Rhea må strekke seg langt for å lage en «demokratisk» filmproduksjon.

Voice er en smart, original og tankevekkende film om dilemmaer i de digitale massemedienes tid. Historien er oppdiktet, men stedene, filmene og menneskene du møter er basert på virkeligheten.

A documentary filmmaker has to deal with critical questions of representation and agency from the potential subjects of her new film. Who has the right to tell their story, if not they themselves?

At the film workshop “VOICE” in an Eastern suburb to Oslo, young people learn to make films using their smartphones, tutored by Dawit, Sara and Juan, three activists. They discuss each other’s films and publish them online - even when the content is controversial. When “VOICE” are approached by Rhea, a filmmaker who wants to make a documentary about them for the national broadcaster, a conflict arises: Who has the right to tell their story?

A smart, original and thought provoking film about dilemmas in the age of mass media.
